What To Know About 2023 BHI Billing Codes

What To Know About 2023 BHI Billing Codes
Read the white paper

Healthcare today is in a constant state of flux, presenting both challenges and opportunities for medical practitioners and administrators. This is especially true in the context of Behavioral Health Integration (BHI), a field that merges patient care with Medicare regulations. This blog is aimed at understanding the 2023 BHI CPT® Codes 99484, G0323, and G0511 in terms of their significance, applications, and pivotal role in seamlessly integrating with behavioral health (BH) services.

Enabling The Whole Person Care Approach With BHI

Like the Chronic Care Management (CCM) approach, BHI recognizes the need to address BH concerns in conjunction with physical health. Research underscores the urgency of integrated care solutions, as over 20% of adults aged 55 and above are affected by mental health disorders. In 2010, 12.8% of Americans were 65 or older; by 2020, that figure had risen by 4 percentage points to 16.8%. In previous decades, the age group's relative size had remained more stable. With the U.S. population undergoing significant demographic shifts, the importance of BHI in enabling whole person care is becoming even more pronounced. The country’s elderly population, projected to rise from 16% to 23% by 2060, demands a focus on integrating mental health services within primary care.

‍Cracking the Code (99484, G0323, and G0511) with AI-Guided Care Coordination Software

The heart of this integration matter lies in understanding the distinctive billing codes that govern BHI services. Let us begin by looking at Code 99484 and why it takes center stage. This code stands for BHI care management services tailored for BH conditions, which requires a minimum of 20 minutes of provider time per patient per month (PPPM). The code’s importance, like you know, comes from the fact that the service associated with it encompasses a spectrum of elements including systematic assessment, continuous patient monitoring, care plan creation, and coordination of BH treatment.

Then there is the billing code G0323 which clinical psychologists (CPs) and clinical social workers (CSWs) are using to seek reimbursement for General Behavioral Health Integration (GBHI), a Medicare expansion. Just like 99484, GBHI too requires a minimum of 20 minutes of CP or CSW time PPPM and includes initial assessment, systematic monitoring, care planning, and coordination of BH treatment.

Finally, there is code G0511 which represents Psychiatric Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) services provided by a psychiatric consultant. Most practices, like yourselves, are warming up to the CoCM because it involves a collaborative approach towards managing BH conditions, with a focus on integrating psychiatric expertise into primary care settings. Code G0511 is used to reimburse these services, which include initial assessments, regular consultations with the primary care team, treatment recommendations, and ongoing support to ensure comprehensive and well-coordinated care for patients with complex BH needs.

Determining Billing and Provider Eligibility For Better Patient Care

While understanding billing codes is certainly important, practical implementation requires efficient systems. This is where a care coordination platform – like Urban Health – steps in, streamlining the entire BHI process. Billing for both BHI and GBHI involves knowing about several crucial components, including CPT® codes, ICD-10 codes, date and place of service, and the National Provider Identifier (NPI) number.

A care coordination platform like Urban Health combines the synergies between BHI and CCM to deliver remarkable benefits to patients dealing with both chronic conditions and BH challenges. How, you ask? – By capturing essential details through accurate documentation and meticulous record keeping, simplifying care plans, eliminating efficiency hurdles, and obtaining patient consent when providing these services concurrently.

Unlocking Revenue Streams Through Integration

A care coordination platform like Urban Health envisions revenue opportunities within the realm of BHI. By enrolling patients in both BHI and CCM programs, it helps healthcare practices boost their revenue significantly. That is why integrating BHI with chronic condition treatment is rapidly emerging as a key strategy for comprehensive patient care, fostering both revenue growth and improved well-being.
